How to Take Pre-Workout: Timing, Dosing & What to Expect
Share
Pre-workout is one of the most effective tools in improving your physical and cognitive performance when exercising, but only when you use it correctly. Timing, dosing, and consistency are all important.
Here's what you need to know.
When Should You Take Pre-Workout?
The sweet spot for most pre-workout formulas is 20–30 minutes before training. This gives the active ingredients, particularly caffeine, beta-alanine, and citrulline, time to absorb and reach peak plasma levels.
Taking it too early (60+ minutes out) means the stimulant effect may peak before you even start working out.
How Much Should You Take?
Always start with the serving size listed on the label (1 scoop with 300ml of water) and if you're new to pre-workout, consider starting with half a serve to assess your tolerance.
Should You Take It on an Empty Stomach?
For most people, taking pre-workout on an empty stomach or with a light snack (e.g., a banana or rice cake) leads to faster absorption and a cleaner feel.
A heavy meal can slow gastric emptying and blunt the effect.
That said, if you're sensitive to stimulants, a small amount of food can help reduce any nausea or discomfort.
